THANK YOU FROM NANSHAN (CHINA)

Photos here.

The Idea.

I’ve been teaching here at the good old Nanshan Bilingual School since the beginning of October. The students in my classes are terrific — boisterous, friendly, not very good with th and v, eager to learn. When Christmas comes, with your help, I’d like to give each of them a Christmas present.

The Numbers.

I have 21 classes in first, sixth, and seventh grade with about 65 students in each class. That’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,375 students.

The Perfect Solution.

The students are at varied stages of learning English, and since English starts with the alphabet — PINSETTER BUTTONS from the very excellent Coudal Partners make the perfect high-volume gift.

The Process.

Each student in each of my classes will get to pick a button at random. Then we’ll do a lot of human-sized spelling, take some pictures, and hopefully they will cherish their buttons at least into the (Chinese) New Year.

Where You Come In.

Please help by donating just a little bit — perhaps a dollar or two, or whatever you like — towards the cost of the buttons and shipping. Donations can be made by credit or debit card through PayPal by clicking the Donate button above.

I’ll update the fundraising progress here and on Twitter. As soon as the needed funds are in, I’ll disable the Donate button and any surplus will be donated at my discretion to 826NYC and Town and Talent.

The Payoff.

Everyone who donates non-anonymously will receive a “thank you” photo (via email) from China.

Update: Actually, it may not be possible to donate anonymously (I didn’t spend a lot of time setting up something elaborate), so if you donate, you’ll probably get a photo.

THANK YOU.
