This week I got sick with the same basic throat or lung infection that I get every year when winter arrives. Betty, one of the Chinese teachers, took me to the school nurse’s office for some medicine. Here’s what the nurse gave me (and charged me 11 rmb for!).
I had to drink two of these with each meal. Tasted like molasses.

The purple-and-white pills on the right were maybe something like Contact or Sudafed—I took three of them three times a day. The Houzheng Wan medicine was little tiny black pills in two vials—I took 10 of them twice a day.

The black Houzheng Wan pills:

This is the nurse’s office—a small room on the first floor with some shelves of medicine:

As one of the teachers told me, “In China, take a lot of medicine.” Indeed. But I am getting better, faster than the usual two weeks. Score one for tiny black pills.

Chinese medicine is amazing. Stinky, but amazing. Growing up, I used to take those vials of tiny black pills for the common cold/flu. It took me forever to learn how to swallow all those pills without them getting stuck in my teeth.
Feel better Sam!

Ni hao, Zhong!
Chinese medicine is not very unusual. But you do have to take a lot of it—many many pills! But now I feel better, so I can say that Chinese medicine works well!
